The SHIRO! Community Grooves to Jung Rhythm This May

Beginning May 1 and running until the end of the month the SHIRO! community will be tackling the challenging, but incredibly charming — in a janky fifth-generation, 3D-graphics sort of way — rhythm game pioneer, Jung Rhythm.

Players will be competing for the best score across each of the seven story stages — this includes the bonus stage. The “Superstars” category — highest combined score across all seven stages — will see not just one but three winners, each issued color-coded patches, gold, silver and bronze, respectively, a first for the SHIRO! Community Challenges.

A “SpeedRun Challenge” also will take place, with video evidence required. The clock for the speedrun challenge will begin the instant that “New Game” is selected, and time will end once credits roll — the Bonus Stage is required.

A separate emulation category will be returning for the May Challenge. The “Vanillabot” prize will be awarded for the highest combined score for all stages, again including the Bonus Stage. As was the case with the March Community Challenge, this category will be available only to participants who don’t own real Saturn hardware (no double-dipping). Finally, any software emulator or FPGA is permitted.

Players will be allowed to compete on either the Japanese-original or English-patched versions of Jung Rhythm.

Jung Rhythm was once rather obscure but has recently entered public consciousness thanks in large part to an English translation effort by none other than Derek (ateam) Pascarella and his team of usual suspects, wiredcrackpot, Shadowmask, and Malenko.
