Alien Odyssey – Source Code for Saturn Port Surfaces…

Thanks to Mr^Burns for bringing this news to our attention!

It seems the source code for a Saturn port of Argonaut GamesAlien Odyssey has surfaced as an anonymous upload to Discord, and the files have been hosted for download over at SegaXtreme. Download: Part1 , Part2 , Part3

Argonaut (best known for games like StarFox, Stunt Race FX, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos & Red Dog: Superior Firepower) also developed this 1995 action-adventure game for MS-DOS, published by Philips Media.

Alien Odyssey blends together several game genres, and includes shooting-based action scenes alongside puzzle-centric adventure sequences. The player assumes the role of protagonist Psaph, a humanoid stranded on an alien planet, who faces off against the Dak, a race of cyborg aliens who want to invade the whole place. The only chance to escape the planet is to help these guys thwart the invasion.

Alien Odyssey consists of four levels with two different gameplay principles: The first is a third-person mode similar to BioForge with action fights in which you need to use melee attacks or firearms to kill your enemies. There are also various commands for movements and dodging available. In this mode the player also needs to solve simple puzzles like using keycards (well, more severed robot hands) to progress or finding out which objective to blow up next.

The other two levels are rail shooter sequences a la Rebel Assault in which the action consists of aiming and shooting down enemies. In the second of those levels the player also has to rotate his ship to dodge.

Mr^Burns says that at this stage it will need some extra work (devkit maybe) to see if it can be built to work.

We are, of course, crossing our fingers that someone with the right experience and tools will come along and get this thing playable… (we know that’s asking a lot… ahem)

In the meantime, if you’re reading this and happen to have an interest in Saturn development, by all means snag a copy of the source code provided in the links above, and give it a look.
