Virtua Fighter 5 remake launching as a PS4 exclusive

SHIRO! SHOW Recap

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is officially getting a modern remake exclusively for the PS4. The digital release is set to be available worldwide on June 1 of this year. IGN posted the announcement trailer on May 25.

Virtua Fighter 5 first released to arcades in 2006, later ported to the Xbox 360 and PS3. Microsoft, PC and Nintendo loyalists will be left out of this 2021 remake unless more ports are announced at a later time.

Signs of life for this remake leaked online when a South Korean board rated Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown for the PS4. As of this writing, it is still not immediately clear if this is part of the Virtua Fighter X eSports project SEGA announced in September of 2020. A live stream announcement for that project is scheduled to start on May 27.

The Virtua Fighter series broke ground by being the first major fully 3D fighter, released to arcades in 1993. It was ported to the Sega Saturn in 1994, starting a bitter rivalry with Sony’s flagship fighter Tekken, an exclusive to the company’s Playstation console. Now 27 years in the future, that competing SEGA franchise has become a Playstation exclusive.
