SEGA Saturn Bootleg Sampler 3

Back on October 24th, 2021, TrekkiesUnite118 offered up to the Saturn community his own take on SEGA’s Saturn Bootleg Sampler, and where SEGA’s use of the term “bootleg” was no more that an ironic, tongue-in-cheek attempt at projecting a cool image, here it literally could not be more appropriate…

This disc is basically a modification of SEGA’s own Bootleg Sampler II (Sega Screams 1) demo disc. All original content has been replaced with recent Homebrew and Translation projects from within the Saturn community. The line up is as follows:

Playable:

  • Tank Game – ReyeMe
  • Cube Cat – 7Shades
  • Sonic Z-Treme – XL2
  • Ninja Penguin Manmaru Translation
  • Sakura Wars Translation – Sakura Wars Translation Team

Trailers:

  • Policenauts – JunkerHQ
  • Grandia – TrekkiesUnite118
  • Lunar Silver Star Story – Mr. Conan
  • Fire Pro Wrestling – Malenko
  • Castlevania Symphony of the Night – KnightOfDragon

Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time someone has experimented with inserting replacement content into one of Saturn’s demo discs. In fact, Paul Met (of Medusa Team) was actually doing this several years ago with his “Shining Force III Deluxe Edition”

However, Trekkies effort really is the first to live up to the spirit of what a bootleg sampler should be, offering a true demo disc consisting of games and projects either still in progress or recently/soon to be released. The potential here is really not to be underestimated, as this really sets a foundation and precedent for future community game demos.

Imagine in just a few years time how elaborate these things could become? The sky’s the limit, and our SHIRO! hats are off to Trekkies for putting together something so cool for the community to share and enjoy. We look forward to seeing more compilations like this and perhaps even seeing the format develop and take shape over the years to come.
