Radirgy and Chaos Field Get Dreamcast Fan Translations!

A double whammy two days apart, both the famous Radirgy and Chaos Fields for the Dreamcast get fan translations thanks to wiredcrackpot and Derek Pascarella (Ateam) respectively! I guess you could call these, a massive MileStone in fan translations…

Radirgy Fan Translation

Back on January 1st, 2021, a patch was dropped by wiredcrackpot for the Dreamcast game Radirgy. While this game was very playable without English text, the person who released the patch used the English Wii version’s script, and inserted it into the Dreamcast version of the game (Side note: I could not find any release for a US version of the game, unless it was on the Wii Shop which has since closed as of this post). UPDATE: It was included in the Wii game, “Ultimate Shooting Collection”, which was a collection of three MileStone Shooters. Radirgy was titled, “Radio Allergy” in said collection.

For a short history of Radirgy, it was originally released in arcades on the SEGA NAOMI arcade system in October of 2005 by MileStone Inc. A few months later, it was then ported to the Dreamcast. Yes, a Dreamcast release in 2006. Obviously, due to the death of the Dreamcast, it sadly never got a release in the west on said console (It did get a release on the Wii apparently, and is getting a Western eShop release on the 10th of January With a Physical release date of said game still unknown)..

The game is a very addicting bullet hell Shmup with really cute cel shaded graphics ala Cel Damage and Wind Waker. You play a schoolgirl named Shizuru Kamigusa, and you must rescue your scientist father and his colleagues from a group of terrorists trying to stop a radio wave allergy cure from being released (Which your character happens to suffer from). Yes, this is a weird story…

Chaos Field Fan Translation

For a little background on Chaos Field, it was another shmup release by MileStone Inc in May of 2004 also for the NAOMI arcade board. The game (Similar to Radirgy), got a Dreamcast port months later. Chaos Field is actually the companies’ first game after leaving Compile to form MileStone Inc. Not bad for a first game, right?

This game doesn’t really have much of a story, it’s straight shmup action! You can select from three pilots with their own fighting attributes. It’s recommended to select one based off how familiar you are with the game, or your skill level with shmups in general. The game is essentially a five stage boss rush mode, where you face three bosses consecutively. It can be challenging if you aren’t used to the gameplay, but after you “git gud“, it becomes a fun, rewarding game!

After seeing the work done on Radirgy, and wanting a short break on potentially his magnum opus of fan translations Nakoruru, Derek (Ateam) decided to try his hands at giving Chaos Fields a similar fan translation effort. Originally, he was just going to take the script from the GameCube version of Chaos Field and insert it into the Dreamcast version. However, it was simpler than that as he explains below:

"I originally planned to borrow the English assets from the GameCube version, just like wiredcrackpot used the Wii version for "Radirgy". However, my job was even simpler than that. The standard retail release of "Chaos Field" on Dreamcast actually shipped with about 80% of the English text and images already baked into the disc. All I had to do was flip a proverbial switch and then translate that remaining 20%!"

– Derek Pascarella (Ateam) on the ease of translating Chaos Field (Soruce)

With this amazing discovery, he was able to finish the translation in record time, and release it for fans to enjoy!

If you’d like to give Chaos Field’s fan translation a try, you can download the patch here.

Thanks again everyone for these amazing translations! With this, fans can finally enjoy these amazing games in English! It’s amazing, only a few days into 2022, and we get some amazing fan translations. If this is the precedent set for this year, then we’re all in for an exciting 2022!
