Preorders to Open for Physical Editions of PowerSlave: Exhumed

PowerSlave Exhumed CE LRG

Limited Run Games announced today that it will begin to take preorders for its physical printings of PowerSlave: Exhumed on Jan. 27.

There are standalone copies of the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions available for US$34.99. The preorder window will end Feb. 26.

For an extra $30, collectors can get the “classic edition,” which comes with alternate covers, a soundtrack CD and Sega Saturn-style longbox.

The PS4 version of the classic edition’s longbox features “LIMITED RUN” text on the front in the same font that “SEGA SATURN” was printed in on original Saturn games. For some reason, the Switch version lacks that text, possibly because of stricter rules about packaging from Nintendo.

PowerSlave: Exhumed is a remake of the acclaimed first-person shooter released on the Saturn in 1996. While a similar version also appeared on the PlayStation as well as a very different version on the PC, developer Nightdive Studios based their remake on the Saturn version, adding in additional levels and enemies from the PS1 version, as a developer revealed during a Games Done Quick speedrun last year.

Incidentally, the PC version of PowerSlave is also getting a collector’s edition, per Limited Run Games’ announcement. It comes with a soundtrack CD, a double-sided poster and a set of epoxy magnets in a classic-style PC box. The game itself comes on a PowerSlave-themed USB drive.

Limited Run originally announced its intentions to make a physical printing of PowerSlave last summer during its LRG3 livestream. The company originally said it would come that year and on the Xbox in addition to the Switch and PS4 — two things that apparently did not pan out.

That announcement also mentioned a forthcoming physical edition of horror game D, but there’s been no word on that since then. The printing would be for the PC and original 3DO versions of the game, not the Saturn port.

Thus far, PowerSlave Exhumed has only been available on digital storefronts, including the eShop, PlayStation Store, the Xbox marketplace, Steam and GOG.

Limited Run has produced physical small-batch runs of games that had been exclusive to digital storefronts since 2017, typically making it a point of emphasis that any game’s downloadable content and post-launch updates are included on the disc or cartridge they sell.

Nightdive Studios and intellectual property owner Throwback Entertainment have built up a library of dozens of old games that they’ve given new life on Steam and GOG.
