Mobile Suit Gundam Fan Translation BETA Release By ShadowMask and Team

Shadow dropped (no pun intended) on the 19th of September, ShadowMask (With editing and translation help from SoloNerfherder) released a beta fan translation of Mobile Suit Gundam for the Saturn.

This game follows the events of the original Gundam series, telling the story through FMV videos, still frame narration, and even recreating scenes in a 2D platformer style.

All the narrative FMV scenes have been translated, and work on the in game dialogue is underway thanks to help from Malenko (Drift King, Bomberman Fight, Terra Phantastica).

The 480p video source for the FMVs was created using the PS2 release of Kidou Senshi Gundam, which tells the same story.  Using higher quality video source allows for adding subtitles without degrading the quality of the original clips when encoded to Saturn Cinepak.

Currently, the game still needs the menus, slide show voice over scenes, and the mission title screens translated.

For the static screens with narration, the team is hoping to hack the VDP to draw subtitles over those sequences.

If you have any experience translating Japanese, or working with assembly, ShadowMask is looking for your assistance on the project.

So far, the fan translation looks awesome, and we’re eagerly anticipating the completed project!
