Gale Racer #BestOfSaturn

A man with a reputation and a mission, you are the Gale Racer! Released to Japanese gamers in 1994, Gale Racer is based on the 1991 SEGA arcade game Rad Mobile.

Play in Arcade, Time Attack, or even two players and tackle many courses, with rivals, traffic, and even police to outmaneuver. The view is all from within the car, and there are no polygons here — this is all scaling sprites, a la OutRun or Power Drift.

The frame rate is decent though the draw distance is somewhat short. Still good for a spin — and you even have a little Sonic doll swinging off your rearview mirror!

Peter Malek

A Saturn fan since the beginning, Peter plays Saturn almost exclusively. For Peter, Saturn represents a moment in time where 2D games were at their best, 3D was just rising, and fascinating gaming 'firsts' were commonplace.  There are very few Saturn games that Peter cannot find some enjoyment in!

  1. Hold on Peter, unless I’ve been blind or stupid all these years, the opponent cars are definitely polygonal in the Saturn version. They weren’t in the original arcade game; “Rad Mobile”, though. Is that where the confusion comes from?

This game gets some hate, but for a 94′ release I still enjoy it from time to time. It’s got that classic Sega arcade music that I never tired of!
