Wizardry VI #BestOfSaturn

The Wizardry series began way back in the early 1980s on Apple computers, being a formative attempt at bringing a Dungeons & Dragons-like experience to video games. The sixth and seventh Wizardry installments released in 1990 and 1992 respectively and were given a 2-for-1 Saturn port in Japan, releasing in mid-1996 under the title Wizardry VI & VII Complete.

The seventh game remains in Japanese, but the sixth was English-patched by Remisse in 2025 using the original English from the DOS release. Subtitled “Bane of the Cosmic Forge,” Wizardry VI is a first-person dungeon crawler with heavy emphasis on party preparation, story exposition, and stat and item management. The game is text-heavy, with written descriptions often complementing the corridor-like visuals in lieu of sounds or animations, giving the game an awesome Wolfenstein meets King’s Quest vibe.

Aside from injecting English text back into the game, Remisse inserted a bunch of content that was initially cut from the Saturn port, implemented a ton of bug fixes, and introduced some quality-of-life improvements to increase the game’s fun factor. He then released the patch in two varieties — one with all the enhancements and one without. Fans of Wizardry or indeed early ‘90s corridor RPGs are well-catered to here.
