Stellar Assault SS came to the Saturn in 1998 courtesy of SIMS Co., being a remake of sorts of the SEGA-developed 32X game Stellar Assault (Shadow Squadron in the U.S.). This is a spaceship combat game, playable from both in-cockpit or behind the ship views, and is much more story-driven than the 32X original.

It’s been a few years since humanity’s first contact with a hostile alien race, and humanity stands united against the threat they pose. In game, you are the silent Ensign Rob Birdie of the Joint Space Command, and either as a one-player experience or with a 2P friend (one pilots, the other mans the weapons) you execute missions against the alien threat.

You receive a briefing before each mission, and must accomplish all objectives to succeed. There is even a Trace Mode which allows players to save their mission runs for later viewing!

Fast and fun, the game was given the English “translation+” treatment in May 2023 by Lacquerware and team. Aside from translating text, the game was fully dubbed by a cast of voice actors, and support for the Mission Stick was programmed in for another layer of control to experience. The level of polish on this fan translation simply shines!

Amazing effort, the only game to receive a similar treatment on the PS1 I can think of is Bragandine: Grand Edition, which received an English Translation plus dubbing.
I’m sorry… “PS1”? What is that? Whatever it is, the name leaves a foul taste in my mouth. 🙂
