Yumimi Mix Remix #BestOfSaturn

Battle Arena Toshinden Remix, Virtua Fighter Remix… how about Yumimi Mix Remix? Yumimi Mix is a 1993 Game Arts collaboration with manga artist Izumi Takemoto, releasing exclusively for the Japanese SEGA CD / Mega CD. The game was then ported to Saturn in 1995 with improved audiovisuals and subtitled “Remix.”

You take the role of schoolgirl Yumimi, who one day starts seeing ghosts and is subsequently approached by a mysterious girl at school who gives her what sounds like a supernatural mission to complete. Just like that, Yumimi’s plain and boring schoolgirl life is over! With your friends Sakurako and Shinichi, manage your schoolwork, friendships, and various choices in a “choose your own adventure” style animated game that looks more like an anime episode than a game.

Japanese Saturn fans had a delightfully more diverse software lineup to choose from compared to their Western brethren — and thanks to the hacking, translation, and playtesting efforts of Supper and cccmar, you too can live out Yumimi’s schoolgirl adventure in fully subtitled English! The patch was released in mid-2024 and includes several translation options to account for linguistic differences, such as the ability to toggle the use of honorifics. Go on… don your uniform and be the schoolgirl you were meant to be!

Peter Malek

A Saturn fan since the beginning, Peter plays Saturn almost exclusively. For Peter, Saturn represents a moment in time where 2D games were at their best, 3D was just rising, and fascinating gaming 'firsts' were commonplace.  There are very few Saturn games that Peter cannot find some enjoyment in!
