Dragon Ball Z: The Legend punched Japanese Saturns in mid-1996, followed by a limited European kick in December of the same year… and by limited, we mean France, Spain, and Portugal only. The title is a one-on-one fighting game featuring 35 characters (or variations thereof) from all eight Dragonball sagas. Fighters are displayed as 2D sprites against a 3D background for a very nice look that retains the feel of the anime. In fact, the entire audiovisual experience is slick and very well done.

For one or two players, you select up to three characters that you can swap out at will during combat and pummel your opponents to submission. Each fight starts on the ground, but it’s possible to fly and hover, so most battles end up in the sky. Punch, kick, and use ki blasts until the joint health meter, which is on the bottom of the game screen, tilts entirely your way. But be careful… use your ki too often and you’ll end up exhausted and momentarily unable to defend yourself.

Very unique as a fighting game and dripping with fan service, the game was not available in English until Super Sayan wonder-inc unleashed his Kamehameha and translated the title in the summer of 2025.
