A mid-1995 Japan-only port of the PC original, the psychological horror Dark Seed is a point and click adventure in the style of H.R. Giger. You’ve just bought an old mansion and immediately have a strange nightmare of an alien seed being planted in your brain, and your subsequent headache won’t go away! You now have three in-game days, which translates to three real-time hours, to “figure it out” and destroy the ancient evil forever.
Compatible with the Saturn mouse, the gameplay is point-and-click, but don’t dawdle because your in-game actions are timed. As you explore and make choices, you may find yourself in unwinnable situations and need to restart, learning from your past mistakes. The visuals are bordered and monochromatic, which is a consequence of H.R. Giger rejecting the 1992 PC original game concept as “too blocky”… so the devs doubled the resolution but were forced down from 256 to 16 colors, which finally secured them Giger’s art.
In early 2025, Kitchen34 got a headache of his own trying to play the Japanese version, so he translated it to both English and French. Coupled with the game’s existing English voicework, Dark Seed is now that much more accessible to Western horror lovers.
