Castlevania: Symphony of the Night #BestOfSaturn

Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) is a Japan-only 1998 Saturn port of Konami’s excellent PlayStation game. Dracula’s castle has mysteriously reappeared, and as his estranged son Alucard, your mission is to infiltrate the castle and destroy him once and for all.

Alucard’s adventure plays as an excellent Metroidvania with plenty of items, different weapons, and spectral familiars, set against gorgeous 2D visuals and a sensational soundtrack. Alternately, play as Richter for a more traditional Castlevania quest, or Maria for an arcade-y experience. However, not only was the Saturn version never available outside of Japan, but it was also criticized for being a poor port.

As perhaps the most tinkered-with Japanese Saturn game of all time, numerous patches and translations have been created, some of which can even be layered. Knight0fDragon produced a translation patch including many QoL fixes. Paul Met & the Meduza Team prepared a separate patch and injected the PSP script into the game alongside many other improvements. Finally, draculax350 layered onto Paul Met’s patch and replaced the PSP script with the PS1 script and added a few improvements of his own. Thus, all the patchers have answered the eternal question “what is a man?” by unleashing their “miserable pile of secrets” for all of us to enjoy.

A Saturn fan since the beginning, Peter plays Saturn almost exclusively. For Peter, Saturn represents a moment in time where 2D games were at their best, 3D was just rising, and fascinating gaming 'firsts' were commonplace.  There are very few Saturn games that Peter cannot find some enjoyment in!
