Back in 2020, TrekkiesUnite118 put together a work in progress Final Fantasy 1 Saturn port using the NES version as a base. Demonstrating the progress he’s made in our SegaXtreme Saturn 26th Anniversary Game Competition video:
Just recently, he’s posted an update to the project over on SegaXtreme, fleshing it out to a full 1.0.0 release:
“You can now play Final Fantasy 1 on your Sega Saturn. This was done by converting the original Disassembly over to C using SBL. The ground work was done by hand to do the Title screen, prelude, party creation screen, overwrold map, and battle system. The rest I had Claude AI fill in the gaps with strict ground rules and review.”
While some of the project uses Claude, the vast majority was done by TrekkiesUnite118 over the years since his initial demo.

One of the biggest differences from the original release was the swapping of saving to a dedicated menu option in town, compared to the original where you needed to use a tent, cottage, or inn to save your progress.
Speaking of saving, not only does it have an option saving to the internal memory or a memory cart, but you can also save (If you have one), to a Saturn Floppy Disk Drive.

If you’d like to give it a try, TrekkiesUnite118 made a simple program that just requires your original NES Final Fantasy 1 ROM to build the Saturn image:
