When I noticed someone mentioned not knowing about the wordle on Saturn it got me thinking what are some of fan games/demo people like. Not like any judgement just curious what people like for fan games now that there’s so many at this point. I’ll say no translations but any ports are acceptable. No commerical games. Feel free to explain if you want to. One of my favorites is cube cat: the amazing maps and movement make this a stellar game, one can’t say no to cat themes either. Wolf 3d, while there are other fps games for Saturn the ability to load alot of the additional maps games etc for wolf 3d on Saturn and running so smoothly is incredible. Minecraft being able to port this to Saturn seems insane even if this is the end of updates it’s still cool to try out. X-Men arcade I grew up loving the og show and always loved the arcade when I could play it. While still in progress it’s great to see more hit arcade multiplayer games on Saturn. Sonic Z-Treme such a wild game with a unique interface. Those are some of the ones I like best and played more. I’ve yet to play a lot of the games and some games I’ve only played just a few minutes and felt not is enough to say “favorite” at least not yet. Some games especially more rpg/story based I’ll want to take My Time. Everyone who has ever worked on any fan or homebrew project is amazing so thanks. What are some of yours? Why? You can find a list from the site and I think most of them from Sega extreme forums. No judgement intended.

Bridget Bishop is a really charming little game in a genre we don’t see much in Saturn Homebrew. It’s the same experience every time but at least it has a little length to it — it takes like half an hour to finish.

Micro Motor Mayhem is fun, and it’s impressive how many tracks and cars it has. The different miniature car theme is cool and I like driving around kitchens and workshop tables and whatnot.

But the greatest homebrew of all is, of course, Touring Truck Challenge. The reasons are self-evident.

I think Farkus’s netlink enabled homebrew is really exciting. Some folks might not like that it leverages claude for a lot of the coding work, but seeing the friday netlink nights congregate around those games tells me there’s more to be explored in that new paradigm of online saturn homebrew.

I don’t have a lot of experience with fan games, but the X-Men arcade port was awesome to see and play. Mostly because that never got a port, back in the day. Hellslave is really impressive to see. I just got a Saturn modem (Japanese one) and the other hardware needed to use it currently (thanks to the Shiro guide). I’m looking forward to setting that up at some point. Hopefully, software emulators and other alternatives pop up for netlink, since the hardware itself seems like a limited quantity at this point.

While not entirely a fan game so much as it is a porting effort, I am particularly excited for the in-development fan port of Tomb Raider II. The port of the Tomb Raider 1 expansion pack Unfinished Business is already a stellar project, so I’m hopeful that TRII will be even better. If the whole game is able to be ported by a lone dev, just imagine how awesome it could’ve been if Core Design hadn’t been hampered by Eidos signing a exclusivity deal with Sony.

Not to mention, porting Tomb Raider II to Saturn also opens up the floodgates to the notion of porting the rest of the 5th-gen entries 🙂

The only Saturn fan game / home brew that really stands out to me is cube cat. It runs on such a high quality engine that it could be mistaken for a official game of the time.
In a way, Cube Cat reminds me of Ninpen Manmaru.
