My first console was a Mega Drive 2, and I was (still am?) a full on Sega (and Sonic Team) Fanboy, so I only had eyes for a Sega Saturn (even in 96) with NiGHTS and Command & Conquer.

I think the price had dropped to £250, around autumn 96 and I remember going to Makro ( its a wholesaler /cash-and-carry chain, my dad have a shop at the time), and the had big display for both psx and saturn, it was still 50%/50% at the tie, but when my Dad went to buy it the guy at the counter heavily tried to persuade him to buy a PSX instead to the point my Dad came back to me to confirm I wanted a Saturn and warned me that he won’t be buying another consoles. I said will never want a playstation ( and I never owned any playstation to this day lol), and while it was disappointed how the Saturn died so young which the many cancelled games, I still don’t regret getting it instead of a psx. Late Saturn Games like Burning Rangers, Shinning Force 3 and Panzer Dragoon Saga made up for that.

    Whats your story?

I have a long story but I’ll make it short.

I grew up with a Genesis in the mid 90s and by 2000 I owned a Genesis, Playstation, N64, and a Dreamcast. I only knew one kid at school who had a Saturn.

Cut to May of 2026, I’m getting back into retro gaming and want to get some Sega stuff to play. I bought a model 2 Genesis from a friend (I also grabbed a Mega Everdrive Pro) and ordered a Japanese Saturn on eBay. I just got a Satiator at the end of June and I couldn’t be more happy with it.

I wish I didn’t miss out on the Saturn because I know I would’ve loved it when I was a kid.

can’t recall all the details, so this will largely be different each time i tell this, but a few details still mostly true. i’ve had atleast 2 saturns in my lifetime, the timing of either will be very wrong and changing each time i say it.
preface: I use to own a sega genesis and a few games probably played phantasy star 2 alot, nothing was ever new though i probably had a genesis while it was still around.
in my city there was a real printed paper with classified ads this was long before anything online existed. inside the classified section is this “Nickel ads” which is extra cheap ads, including free stuff sometimes. I’m almost certain this is how i found my first saturn, i asked my mom for a ride lates 90s, probably 97 to 99 sometime. it was some black saturn not sure the model etc, it had a bunch of games largely sports from a mother. my current saturn(white Japanese) i got from http://www.consolegoods.co.uk i can’t track when i got my saturn but i did place 2 orders one in 2016 and one in 2018. I suspect my white saturn, multitap and like 5 controllers i got in 2010s sometime. i was one of the early people who helped funded the satiator while not the first batch i think mine was in the 2nd batch of releases. between ebay(2000 on) and probably 2013 meeting Murderofcrows at PRGE. had games but not a console to play. 2013 to 2015 is most likely when i became mroe active and cared. loaning my saturn has msot likely been close to 10 years now. re: phantasy star cant find it in my ebay history but i for sure was search for like 3 years on ebay trying to find a copy for saturn that was cheap, date unknown but i wanted PSC for saturn badly, sometime between 2000 and 2008 got my copy off ebay.

I picked up my first SEGA Saturn console on 20 June 1997, so I’ve been playing it for just over 29 years now. The console still works like it did on day one, including the overheating issue if you play it for too long and try to start a new game.

I picked it up from KMart when they used to have 15% off storewide sale, and got my friend’s store discount on top of that too. With it I got Daytona CCE, Doom, and Tomb Raider. I originally wanted Sonic 3D instead of Tomb Raider, but for some reason the game was out of my budget on that particular day. I spent all night playing Daytona and Doom, and trying to figure out Tomb Raider, which I initially found frustrating but captivating at the same time. The disc for Doom was warped, so I had to take it back several times before realising KMart’s whole stock of the game was warped (because it was stored right beneath a cabinet light), so I ended up picking it up from Target instead.

My Saturn collection quickly built up, what with the system’s games being heavily discounted soon after purchasing the console. Alien Trilogy, Road Rash, The Need for Speed, Street Fighter Alpha 2, NBA JAm Extreme (ugh), the NiGHTS Into Dreams… bundle, Manx TT Superbike, SEGA Rally, X-Men: Children of the Atom… The list went on… And then there were secondhand stores where I managed to pick up games even cheaper.

Friends and I would spend whole nights playing games like Street Fighter Alpha 2, which made a friend borrow my system and then want to pick up a Saturn for himself. I remember taking my Saturn to a school sleepover where people played Rally, Daytona, and Fighters Megamix on a projector all night, only disappointed that they couldn’t play Virtua Cop 1 and 2 on that screen with the light guns. In the 2000s, a group of friends and I would play Puzzle Fighter so much we were still seeing the falling block patterns as we tried to go to sleep.

SSM soon became my bible and they alerted me to tons more games I would eventually pick up, like the fantastic NiGHTS, the Panzer Dragoon games, and the Shining series. I only played the former because I rented the analogue controller to play Daytona CCE with and ended up falling in love with NiGHTS. I picked up Panzer Dragoon Zwei for cheap secondhand when SSM hyped up PDS, making me a lifelong fan of this series I never knew about.
