Rainbow Cotton Fan Translation Released For Dreamcast

SHIRO! SHOW Recap

Since being teased by SHIRO! a few shows ago, the project our very own Patrick has been working on, has now been released!

For those of you unaware, Rainbow Cotton is a 3D rail shooter in the vein of Space Harrier (Or like it’s Genesis/MegaDrive counterpart Panorama Cotton). You play as the ever popular witch Cotton, on her quest to eat as many Willow Candies as possible save York Country from the evil Tweed.

The game itself came out January 20th, 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast. As you can guess from the title of the article, the game remained exclusive in Japan for many years. Cotton sadly has the reputation of being a Japanese only series (save for a few arcade boards floating around the states.), and this game was no exception to that rule.

After 21 years though, Derek Pascarella (A-Team), and his team have dropped a fan translation for this wonderful game, so fans can now enjoy every facet of this 3D rail game!

Our very own Patrick (Writer of this article actually), had a hand in this translation. Adding subtitles to the games various cutscenes. (It’s honestly very weird to write this in 3rd person, haha).

Asking the team about the completion of the project, this is what they had to say:

Burntends: “We’re always in need of passionate fans. They’re the most valuable asset to any project”

Adding, that he would like a call to arms for help on the script for the Sakura Wars Game Boy translation currently in development

Derek Pascarella (Ateam): “The Dream™ never dies…”

Danthrax: “I’m really happy with how the timings on those video subtitles turned out. While editing, I’ve never had to think about that sort of thing before, but it was an interesting challenge and I think it turned out pretty well. Each caption should be comfortable for players to read.”

Patrick (TraynoCo): “I’ve worked with Derek on his previous translation projects for Taxi 2, and Sakura Wars: Columns 2’s subtitles, and he approached me for Rainbow Cotton to assist him with it’s subtitles. It was honestly the most cutscenes I’ve had to subtitle, and the most dialogue to boot. Taxi 2 was pretty long, but this was a lot longer. It was all worth the work though, I’ve been a mega fan of Cotton for years, and it’s cool to have pretty much every game at this point in English. Out of all the projects I’ve worked on, this has to be my favourite. I really stepped up my A game on subtitles for this one, and look forward to working with Derek more giving the chance.”

Some of Patrick’s favourite work.

Thanks to Derek and his amazing team for making this possible! We look forward to more projects in the future!
