Last month, sharp-eyed Saturn fan Cerbero spotted an auction listing for a CD labeled Pyramid: Sega Saturn (3-26-97).

It’s always intriguing when a build of an unreleased game surfaces. But Pyramid wasn’t just unreleased — it wasn’t on any Saturn fan’s radar as ever having existed.
The disc was acquired, thanks to contributions from some community members. It turned out to be a tech demo with a scene from the PC game Pyramid: Challenge of the Pharaoh’s Dream.

The developer of the port was identified — thanks to the signature on the CD-R — as engineer Alexander Ehrath. The Hidden Palace media team interviewed him, and learned that Pyramid didn’t get past the tech demo stage; the publisher canceled the project before announcing it.
Saturn fans will also be interested to learn about Ehrath’s other projects. In the Hidden Palace interview, describes working on a World Series Baseball game for Sega of America. A localized version of one of Sega of Japan’s Greatest Nine games came out instead. He also worked on another ill-fated Saturn baseball game for SegaSoft.
There is more about Pyramid and Ehrath’s other projects being published today, April 30:
- The Pyramid disc image has been preserved and released by Hidden Palace.
- The interview with Alexander Ehrath is available on the Hidden Palace Podcast.
- An article about Pyramid and how the Saturn tech demo works is up at Rings of Saturn.
