Two more light-gun-compatible games, Chaos Control and Die Hard Trilogy, have received quality-of-life patches thanks to privateye.

Privateye has been busy this year. Check out SHIRO!’s coverage of his other quality-of-life patches here — batch 1, batch 2, and batch 3.

The Chaos Control patch functions identically to most of privateye’s previous light-gun patches, i.e., simply removes the “flash” that appears when triggered by the controller. These screen “flashes” are unnecessary when playing either game via FPGA emulators — MiSTer or SuperStation One — with LCD compatible light-guns, i.e., GC01, GUN4IR, and Sinden.

Note that if you intend to patch and play Chaos Control with a light-gun, then you will need to use the PAL and Japanese Remix versions of the game — not the objectively flawed original Japanese version — as these supported the Virtua Gun.
The Die Hard Trilogy improvement patch, in addition to removing the screen flashes, gives the player some other additional optional benefits:
- Unlocks cheat menus in all three games.
- Activates anamorphic widescreen in “Die Harder” (aka “Die Hard 2”) and “Die Hard with a Vengeance”(aka“Die Hard 3”).
As privateye points out above, the anamorphic widescreen functionality of the Die Hard Trilogy improvement patch was built off of the work of Esppiral and their screen resolution hack that they shared all the way back in August 2020.
For those hoping to play Die Hard Trilogy with this patch, it is the “Die Hard 2” section of the game that features light-gun support.
Both titles were ports from other home consoles. The Infogrames Multimedia developed Chaos Control released first on the CD-i in 1995 — and is remembered as one of the best titles for the console — before coming to Japanese Saturns later that year.
The initial Japanese Saturn port of Chaos Control was considered poor with technical flaws and cut content. These failings would be largely, but not entirely, ameliorated with the enhanced release that came to PAL territories in 1996, and then back to Japan that same year as Chaos Control Remix.

Chaos Control caught Bo Bayles’ attention last November. See what he found here!

Die Hard Trilogy, developed by Probe Entertainment, was first released on PlayStation in 1996 and then ported to the Saturn in 1997. The Saturn version suffers from lower resolution and framerates, with missing assets and effects when compared to the PlayStation original, an all-too-common trend in porting efforts in the fifth generation. As a result, the title is often considered inferior to Sega’s own game situated in the Die Hard franchise, that being Die Hard Arcade (aka Dynamite Deka), which was ported from the ST-V arcade original to the Saturn just two months after Die Hard Trilogy. All that said, while there are objective technical shortcomings present, there is still plenty of fun to be had with Die Hard Trilogy on the Saturn.
