Revolutionary Girl Utena #BestOfSaturn

One of the very first Saturn titles to receive a fan translation, Revolutionary Girl Utena: Story of the Someday Revolution is a polished visual novel based on the excellent anime of the same name.

Taking place between the show’s eight and ninth episodes, the game is a side story fitting neatly into the overall anime’s narrative. Here, you play an incoming exchange student to the prestigious Ohtori Academy, and befriend fellow students Utena Tenjou and Anthy Himemiya, the Rose Bride, as you work together to uncover the secret of the mysterious newcomer Chigusa.

The game is essentially story exposition with multiple decision points as you navigate school life, rose duels, and relationships with members of the Student Council. The game keeps track of your relationships (your Heart’s Nobility stat) with the anime’s main characters, impacting your final battle at the end of the game and affecting what ending you see… but it’s all hard to do, in Japanese.

Thankfully, in 2015, the team of Endless, Dallbun, Ayu Ohseki, LuxLustravi, Loki, and Josh Breitbart earnt maximum Heart’s Nobility in translating all of the in-game text to English, so that we, too, may smash the world’s shell… for the revolution of the world!

Peter Malek

A Saturn fan since the beginning, Peter plays Saturn almost exclusively. For Peter, Saturn represents a moment in time where 2D games were at their best, 3D was just rising, and fascinating gaming 'firsts' were commonplace.  There are very few Saturn games that Peter cannot find some enjoyment in!
