Fists of Ouchie Punches Its Way Into SegaXtreme Showcase

A small but promising homebrew game was submitted to the SegaXtreme Showcase last month: Fist of Ouchie, a 2D versus fighting game.

It somewhat resembles Super Smash Bros. — its stages have platforms and sometimes intricate designs, and characters can fall off of them. Characters get knocked back a bit when getting hit, too, although they have traditional health bars rather than damage percentages.

Its controls are pretty simple. Press A to jump, press B to punch and press C, X, Y, Z, L or R to kick.

You can download Fist of Ouchie from its SegaXtreme Resources page.

ThatOneGuy originally made Fists of Ouchie in a high school game jam. They started porting it to Saturn around late November or early December and released the first public version, 0.9, in January. There have been five updates since then.

The version released in March before the SegaXtreme Showcase’s deadline added a single-player capability.

“Single player is now in a playable state though many changes still need to happen before it’s done,” ThatOneGuy said in the patch notes. “I don’t have menus for switching between single and multi player but I do have button combinations. Multiplayer is on by default.”

To use single-player while in the default multiplayer waiting menu, press A on controller 1 to make player one ready (player two should not be ready) then hold the B button and left on the D-pad. If you’re already in the single-player waiting menu, press A on controller 2 to make player two ready (player one should not be ready) then with hold the B button and right on the D-pad on controller 1, then make player one ready.

The latest version of the game, released May 27 a couple weeks after the showcase’s deadline, added “a small amount of time you can jump when just starting to fall of a platform.” It’s a feature commonly added to 2D platformers called “coyote time.”

Fists of Ouchie is one of 14 original games submitted to the SegaXtreme Sega Saturn 31st Anniversary Showcase. You can read more about them and the showcase’s other submissions here.
