J.B. Harold Blue Chicago Blues #BestOfSaturn

A 17-year-old named Angie Hart is found dead at the foot of the planetarium in Chicago, and it’s up to detective J.B. Harold — YOU — to solve this murder mystery. J.B. Harold Blue Chicago Blues is the fifth and final J.B. Harold game and the first to be ported to the Saturn, releasing in Japan in late 1995.

The title is an FMV-driven visual novel-style detective game. Scenes shot with real actors play out, pausing now and then for you to make decisions which affect how the game unfolds. Although FMV games tend to be linear, this is much less the case here, as any of the locations and people of interest can be visited in (almost) any order. The mystery must be solved in four in-game days — the game keeps track, and each action costs a certain amount of time to complete, so you must choose your actions wisely.

Any clues you gather will be stored in the Chicago PD computer, so you don’t need to whip out your pen and pad. One other thing you don’t need is a translation guide, thanks to Arjak, who investigated, interrogated, and finally translated the Saturn version in late 2023 for our enjoyment. Hooray!

Peter Malek

A Saturn fan since the beginning, Peter plays Saturn almost exclusively. For Peter, Saturn represents a moment in time where 2D games were at their best, 3D was just rising, and fascinating gaming 'firsts' were commonplace.  There are very few Saturn games that Peter cannot find some enjoyment in!
