Just curious how folks are playing Saturn these days? I find despite having multiple Saturns with a Satiator, etc. and a dual ram MiSTer, I end up playing on my laptop with Ymir. The current versions run well and it’s very low friction (the biggest reason for me these days) to just use one of the retro bit pads via usb and just play. I don’t have to worry about which system has which save, etc and I can use save states to just get back in to a game (really useful for Dragon Force recently) bypassing start up and various menus. I’m not one to be super sensitive to input lag and the games I find myself playing these days are mostly RPGs. Obviously, no wrong answer as long as you are playing Saturn. 🙂

I always play on my actual Saturn, (which i also have the Satiator), when i’m just playing by myself or with a friend.

But sometimes when I stream, i’ll just use the Mednefen emulator on my PC, with my Saturn Controller to USB adaptor so I can use my actual Saturn controllers (it supports the 3D pad as well!), just because it’s so much easier to setup.

For me, I’m using my trusty Hitachi-Hi Saturn. Looks brand new but in reality I’ve been using it over 30 years 😅.

The CD drive is starting to give out now so I play all Saturn games via the Satiator and only use discs when the game requires the MPEG card which comes with the Hi-Saturn.

I’ll never sell my games though. At one point I did have a complete Japanese Saturn set but sold about half (mostly the dating games and strange stuff) now I’m left with about 600+ Japanese Saturn games.

I’ve been pretty consistent in using my grey Japanese Saturn with a Satiator, as I enjoy the ritual of sitting down in front of a TV to play. Sometimes I’ll play on my Retroid Pocket 3+, but not often.

I love to keep the option of using physical discs open, and like Yakumo I’ll hopefully never sell the small collection I’ve amassed since 2000, mostly US and JPN titles.

I run that all through an RGB Scart cable to a Retrotink5x, and I love every second of it. If I had to do it all over again from scratch, I’d probably just emulate, or get a Saturn and use a satiator or other. Too pricey these days for my blood.

            SHIRO!

When I’m just checking something out quickly or I’m taking screenshots and footage for SHIRO!, I use the Bizhawk emulator on my PC.

If I’m sitting down to properly play a Saturn game, or of course if I’m going to play online via NetBand Tunnel, I’m playing my real Saturn hooked up to a CRT. I use either a real disc or a bin/cue on Satiator.

And sometimes I play on my MiSTer with single RAM hooked up to our 4K TV to test out new core builds, or I play on the Yaba Sanshiro emulator on PC to investigate how a game is displaying graphics or to rip art assets from it.

                1 HST-3220 Sega Saturn Console (Serial P26023998 670-8063b)
its a white japanese console. While i did have an action replay and later converted to Pseudo Kai I haven’t used PSK in a long time.
I have over 100 physical games but I tend to play using a sataitor and bin cue format. When i take my saturn to events I tend to do the same thing. while i do have mednafen installed on computer i haven’t used it in years.
I tend to use a retrotink 2x not 5 and hook up to monitor(obs). I use to use:
                Polaroid FLM-1507 LCD TV(component(HD)\VGA\RCA\Svideo)
For events depends what they give me but tends to be CRT and i hook up with hdmi(sometimes events share my saturn with snes or other retro console giving priority to rca for snes).

I used to own a Saturn console in the 90’s, but these days I’ve had to scale back on original hardware due to space (and finances). Been enjoying Saturn again as of late through emulation and ended up discovering the Shiro podcast as a result!

I mainly play via a Lenovo tiny PC Batocera build on my TV or sometimes SSF on my Windows desktop. Did however pick up an 8bitdo M30 to get a little bit of that original vibe.

I use a 60hz modded PAL Saturn on my CRT, my laptop is so bad that emulation isn’t really an option for me. I use discs (either PAL discs forced into 60hz or NTSC-U discs using a Pseudo Saturn Kai) or my Satiator. I don’t think I would’ve played as much Saturn if I didn’t have my setup, for me it’s the ideal way of playing, but to each their own.

I see here that the Satiator is quite popular and I agree as it’s easily the best solution for keeping your Saturn stock but allowing for ISO play.
On many forums you see people raving about the Saoru (or whatever it’s called). I understand it’s cheap but the compatibility rate isn’t as good as other options plus it runs through the Saturn cartridge port, a port that it’s infamous for being unreliable. Why is that I wonder? Too many pins used to read the cartridge?

                    SHIRO!

The Saturn’s pins are very dense, so it doesn’t take much dirt to cause problems when compared to other consoles with less dense pins.

dense is putting it politely 😅
I’ve owned many Saturn’s from new and take extremely good care of my stuff yet they all have issues with the cartridge ports. Such a shame as the rest of the console is solid.

My Saturn unfortunely don’t read discs anymore, and i don’t have CRT too, then i use Retroarch with the Beetle Saturn core and i’m satisfied with the quality of the emulation.

One day i will buy the Saroo to play on the saturn hardware again.

I’ve been enjoying Saturn.emu on an Android tablet for a few years, while it’s not a well known emulator, which I’m quite surprised, it’s based on Mednafen Saturn and runs all Saturn games at full speed in a mid range device, at least, all games I tried run quite well.

Also, using Beetle Saturn (Retroarch core) and enjoying the Retroachievements that encourages me to replay a few classics, I’m currently replaying Tomb Raider and having a blast with the nostalgia, so many memories playing this one all the way trough at 11yo in 1997.

This core has been updated and performs so well in the same device, I can fast forward to skip loadings faster and stuff like that.
I also use the same emulator setup on a PC, but I’ve been enjoying the tablet more for convenience, with a 8-Bit Do Pro 2 gamepad.
On PC I use a PS4 gamepad (never bought a PS4, but the controller is great for general use).

I guess the “edit” function isn’t implemented yet, but reading the comments above I just remember I forgot to say I got the M30 8-Bit Do gamepad about a year ago, it’s pretty good!

It’s a pretty great controller! I only use mine for 2D Saturn titles though. Anything that requires movement in a 3D space, I will fall back on a Series X controller.
