A Dead or Alive English Localization Lands on the Saturn!

Once again, prolific fan translator Exxistance releases another English fan translation in his “Summer of Saturn” series. Today, he translated the remaining Japanese text on Saturn fighter Dead or Alive. While it got a PlayStation port in the West, but unfortunately the Saturn version never got a release outside of Japan.

If you’d like to give this translation a try, a link to Exxistance’s GitHub with the patch can be found here!

The Saturn version of the game is very playable for non-Japanese speakers, though things such as character bios, character moves, name entry screen, and save warnings are still in Japanese.

The Now Loading screen still remains in its original state on this fan translation.

For this translation, Exxistance used the Xbox Dead or Alive 1 Ultimate version of the game to get the necessary English text:

“This patch translates the last remaining Japanese elements to English, courtesy of the existing translation found in the 2004 Xbox release of Dead or Alive 1 Ultimate. While that’s a good way to play the game, there’s a bilinear filter applied to it that makes all the 2D elements look way too blurry. The Saturn version is still the best way to play (IMO)”

So this isn’t an English translation, it’s more of a localization using the English version of the game by Team Ninja.

  1. Although it’s not a huge change, these smaller translations give it much more of a polished feel. It’s great to see fighters getting the transition treatment. The gomashio at our base is delightful! You should stop by.
