It’s a good question… I wish I knew. When Sega announced the three-phase “Project Sonic” at the spring 1997 Tokyo Game Show, part of me wonders if one of those phases was meant to be Sonic Adventure on the Saturn but that would mean they hadn’t moved its development to the Dreamcast yet. If the third phase, aside from Jam and R, was really supposed to be 3D Blast, why wait so long to release it? It’s not like it had serious issues that needed to be fixed.
And yeah, Saturn games still came out in 1999 (and one in 2000) but they were pretty sparse. Only like 16 games, and 12 of those were before April 30.

SHIRO! after dark…

If I’m sitting down to properly play a Saturn game, or of course if I’m going to play online via NetBand Tunnel, I’m playing my real Saturn hooked up to a CRT. I use either a real disc or a bin/cue on Satiator.
And sometimes I play on my MiSTer with single RAM hooked up to our 4K TV to test out new core builds, or I play on the Yaba Sanshiro emulator on PC to investigate how a game is displaying graphics or to rip art assets from it.
For anyone who missed it, it’s here:
What did y’all think of all that Maximum Surge footage?!
Bridget Bishop is a really charming little game in a genre we don’t see much in Saturn Homebrew. It’s the same experience every time but at least it has a little length to it — it takes like half an hour to finish.
Micro Motor Mayhem is fun, and it’s impressive how many tracks and cars it has. The different miniature car theme is cool and I like driving around kitchens and workshop tables and whatnot.
But the greatest homebrew of all is, of course, Touring Truck Challenge. The reasons are self-evident.
Test successful!
